Personal Statement

Immigrating to the United States has shaped my dreams and aspirations in a variety of ways. I settled in California in 2004, when all I knew was fluent Spanish and a mentality to learn as much English I could in school, which was insanely hard at the time. The transition of migrating from El Salvador to the United States drastically impacted my life by learning a new culture and lifestyle. Not only did I have difficulties in making friends but being academically competitive against my fellow classmates was really hard when the only word I really knew was “hello”. As a seven year old, I struggled to comprehend and communicate in English; my understanding of math on the other hand has enabled me to form future goals I never thought possible when I arrived to the United States.
My comprehension of mathematics enabled me to build up my confidence at school because I was able to follow along these lessons much easily. For this reason, I would like to pursue a career where math is used frequently and in a professional setting preferably in the field of accounting. This major also interests me because I want to be able to have a broad range of career options upon graduation such as preparing to be a certified public accountant, working in finance or maybe even marketing. Being a certified public accountant would not only open doors for me but would increase my chances for being recruited into one of the big four accounting firms, these firms perform audits, financial consulting, and legal services for businesses. I recognize that I have much to learn regarding this field and I hope to build the skills necessary as a college student to be successful in this field. Similar to the challenges I faced when I immigrated here I anticipate many roadblocks that I will have to overcome to being successful in these fields.
My immigration from El Salvador has provided me the opportunity at a new life. My life experiences have come together to inspire me and my support networks which helped me to develop the perseverance and character necessary to achieve my dreams and aspirations. In particular my parents, teachers, coaches, counselors and mentors have all played a critical role in helping me to foster my academic interests in mathematics, formulate life goals and motivate me to strive for success in the classroom.
